Maputo · M-Pesa, e-Mola and card

A wallet for one night out.

Put money on your phone when you arrive, pay for drinks by showing a code at the bar, and take home whatever you did not spend. No cash, and no waiting on a card machine.

Buy tickets

Sign in with Google or Apple, then enter your phone number.

A busy bar at one in the morning still runs on cash and card machines. Both are slow.

  • Cash

Change, mental arithmetic and mistakes at the till, with the queue waiting.

  • Card machines

They drop signal, time out and hold up the queue at the worst moment.

  • Rounds in a group

Somebody pays, everyone else means to settle up later, and it never quite happens.

Nearly everyone in the room already carries mobile money on their phone. What was missing was a fast way to spend it at the counter.

How it works

From the first drink to the ride home, in five steps.

Every night at a bar or an event opens a fita: a wallet that exists for that event only.

  1. Step 01

    Open

Scan the code printed on the table card or poster, or accept a friend's invite. The fita opens for tonight's event.

  2. Step 02

    Top up

Put money on the fita from M-Pesa, e-Mola or a card.

  3. Step 03

    Order

Pick drinks from the venue's live menu, from anywhere in the room.

  4. Step 04

    Pay

Show the code on your phone. The barman scans it, checks the drinks on the counter, and confirms.

  5. Step 05

    Go home

Withdraw whatever is left back to mobile money and close the fita.

At the bar

Nothing is charged until the barman confirms.

Scanning your code only shows the order. Money leaves the fita on a second tap, once the barman has checked that the drinks on the counter are the ones you ordered.

  1. 01

    Scan

The barman scans your code and sees the order. Nothing has moved yet.

  2. 02

    Check

They compare the order with the drinks on the counter.

  3. 03

    Confirm

Only then does the amount leave your fita.

Something wrong? You have ten minutes.

Show the refund code to the barman. They scan it and the money goes back onto your fita.

Groups

One fita for the whole table.

A fita can be shared. The group puts money into one balance, and nobody has to chase anybody for their share.

  • Everyone sees everything

Every top-up and every round is visible to all members of the fita.

  • The owner decides

Whoever owns the fita chooses who may spend and who may withdraw.

  • The history stays

After the night is closed, the history is still there to check who paid for what.

Safety

Money on your fita is still yours.

A top-up is not a sale. Money only passes to the venue at the moment a barman confirms a charge. Until then, you can spend it or withdraw it.

  • Codes nobody else can use

Your payment code changes every 15 seconds and expires after a minute. A screenshot of it is useless.

  • The fee comes first

Before you withdraw, you see the amount, the fee and what arrives, all together.

  • The same balance on every screen

Balances and totals come from the server. Nothing is calculated on the phone, so the number is the same everywhere.

  • One fita at a time

At the bar there is never a question about which balance you are paying from.

Frequently asked questions

How do I sign in?

With your Google or Apple account. Then you enter your phone number, which is how friends invite you to a fita.

Do I need a bank account?

No. Top up the fita with M-Pesa, e-Mola or a card, and withdraw whatever is left to mobile money.

What happens to the money I did not spend?

It is still yours. Withdraw it to M-Pesa or e-Mola and close the fita. Before you confirm, you see the fee and the amount you will receive.

They got my order wrong. What now?

For ten minutes after paying, you can show a refund code to the barman. They scan it and the money goes back onto the fita.

What if somebody takes a photo of my code?

They cannot use it. The code changes every 15 seconds and expires after a minute.

Can I have more than one fita open?

No. You have one fita at a time, so there is never any doubt at the bar about where the money comes from.

Where can I use Paga?

At bars and events in Maputo that accept Paga. Look for the code on the table card or the event poster.

How much does it cost?

Paga charges a fee when you withdraw money from a fita. The fee is always shown before you confirm.
